Paddy Power was founded in 1988, by the merger of the forty shops of three Irish bookmakers: Stewart Kenny, David Power, and John Corcoran. Stewart Kenny and Vincent O'Reilly had sold Kenny O'Reilly bookmakers to Coral in 1986, and then opened ten shops of their own by 1988; Kenny was group CEO from 1988 to 2002, and chairman from 2002 to 2003.

Paddy Power-owner Flutter has said its UK betting shop revenue has jumped higher than pre-Covid levels.
Paddy Power and Betfair owner Flutter said it had agreed to pay around £147m in addition to a £73m sum it had previously paid to settle its legal problems in the US state of Kentucky. Kentucky launched legal proceedings against what it said were unlicensed wagers made through Poker Stars between 2006 and 2011, saying it was owed £638million. In 2015, a judge awarded the state £213million, which was later raised to £638million plus interest.

Over the same period the company, which also owns SkyBet and Betfair, experienced a 221% rise in pre-tax profit to £77m. In the UK and Ireland alone, revenue grew by 30% to £1.1bn, despite Paddy Power stores being closed for the entirety of the first quarter and a proportion of Q2.
